What Religion Is Robert Downey Jr.?
Downey is spiritual and eclectic rather than tied to one faith. In interviews he has said he tried several paths, including a period of interest in the Hare Krishna movement, before settling on describing himself as a “Jew-Bu”, a Jewish Buddhist.
Jewish Roots
His father, the filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., had Jewish ancestry; his mother, actress Elsie Ford, did not. Religion was not a strong presence in his childhood in New York and Los Angeles, and he has said he does not know exactly “where I fall.”
Buddhism and Recovery
Downey has credited meditation and Buddhist ideas, together with martial arts practice, with helping him stay sober after his addiction and legal troubles of the late 1990s and early 2000s. That period of recovery set up the comeback that led to Iron Man and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Oppenheimer.
